Praying for COP 26

1 November, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 13 November, 2021 @ 5:00 pm

Archbishop of Canterbury says this in Feb ‘21 “Those with the power to effect change will need to balance that power with their responsibility. In the Bible’s accounts of the creation of the world, God gives humans dominion over the Earth. But replacing dominion with domination is a false theology and a sin, we should look instead to Jesus’ words that the Son of Man ‘did not come to be served, but to serve’. As the Anglican Communion’s fifth Mark of Mission puts it ‘to serve the Earth, not enslave it’.

I speak as a Christian. Jesus teaches us that there are no greater commandments than to love God and love our neighbour. To abide by those commandments as a Christian today is to step up to the challenge of climate change and connected environmental crises”.

Please pray for COP26 The annual ‘Conference Of Parties’ arose from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, and has run since 1995. The UK is host to the 26th meeting in Glasgow (Nov 1st to 12th), where at least 30,000 reps of over 200 countries, businesses, NGOs and faith groups will gather.  COP26 is crucial: it’s probably our last chance for world leaders to commit to actions to save the Earth from climate catastrophe. Please pray for leaders and others at COP26; find christian reflections at https://greenchristian.org.uk/theological-reflections-on-cop26/ and more information here https://greenchristian.org.uk/cop-26-glasgow-2021/ .

The second creation story begins by telling us that “adam” – the man – was taken from the earth, adamah (Genesis 2:4b). In other words, humans are part of creation. They do not live in an “environment” but are indissolubly linked with every other part of creation: “everything is related to everything else” as the ecologists tell us.

1st November – World Leaders’ Summit: discussions on action to secure net zero emissions, and keep average global temperatures from rising more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
