Welcome to our church
The church of St John the Baptist in Horrabridge has been working together with the Methodist Church since the Methodist church in the village closed ten years ago. Horrabridge is a village of around 3000 people, with a village general stores and post office, and various other businesses such as a hairdressers, art gallery etc. There are two pubs and a takeaway fish and chip shop. The primary school has over 200 pupils and was rated outstanding at the last Ofsted inspection, and this attracts young families to the village. There is a large serving and ex-services community, who turn out in force for the annual Remembrance Day service.
The church was built in 1893 and the porch was added in 1913-14. It has a Grade II* listing. It is very much valued by the village, particularly older members of the community, many of whom used to attend regularly as children. The heating system is efficient and visitors often comment on the warmth (physical and spiritual) of the church. A kitchen was incorporated into the church about five years ago and this has enabled us to do much more in the way of fundraising by giving us the opportunity to provide refreshments and outreach events. There is a modern four bedroomed rectory adjoining the church, which is occasionally used for meetings and house groups.
The service times are as follows:
- 1st Sunday – 10.30am Parish Communion
- 2nd Sunday – 10.30am Parish Communion
- 3rd Sunday – 10.30am Methodist Communion
- 4th Sunday – 10.30am Morning Worship
- 5th Sunday – 10.00am a joint Mission Community service in one of the Mission Community churches
- Last Friday of the month – 7.30pm Ignite – an informal service of worship and testimony
There are several prayer groups
The church is open during the day almost every day – occasionally it is closed if the church has been set up for an event. The church plays an active part in the life of the village. It has a Friends group, which raises money for the building by putting on various events, often concerts, which are held in the church.
Lite Bite is held every Tuesday between 12.30 and 2pm, when a light lunch is served. A good proportion of those attending are not churchgoers. No charge is made but donations for charity are accepted. This year we are raising money for Horrabridge Youth Club. This is open to anyone who would like to join us.
We run occasional craft afternoons for the village, such as at Easter and Mothering Sunday.
The Men’s Breakfasts are held six times a year, when a full English breakfast is served at 8.30am on a Saturday. A speaker gives a talk for about 40 minutes following the breakfast. Again, this is open to all men, and the majority are not churchgoers.
The church is also used for various concerts, exhibitions, talks etc.
